JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Transportation Mechanics Supervisor/Parts Manager

REPORTS TO: Transportation Supervisor 

APPROVAL DATE: ________________________________________________________________________________________

JOB GOAL: To keep the district's buses and other vehicles in such a state of operating excellence that they present no avoidable problems or interruptions to the educational program

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:  Shop Personnel

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Supervising the diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing of district equipment. 
  • Maintaining a current inventory of parts, shop equipment and supplies 
  • Implement and oversee an efficient and effective preventive maintenance programs 
  • Maintain and repair lighting systems in school zones 
  • Write and maintain current specifications sheet for district vehicles and buses 
  • Oversee purchasing of district buses and vehicles according to state contract and purchasing guidelines Keeping current all tags, decals and state inspections 
  • Review budget and insure all purchases are within budget and state guidelines 
  • Monitor and purchase gas and diesel fuel for district bulk tanks. 
  • Maintain and make repairs to bulk tanks and fixtures 
  • Monitor district vehicles and advise Transportation Supervisor on replacement 
  • Ensure that warranty procedures are adhered to on district vehicles 
  • Write and enter work orders and other data into maintenance program 
  • Review and inspect building inventory on all coded items as needed 
  • List all surplus items and deliver to Property Manager for disposal 
  • Maintain districts communications system 
  • Performing any and all other duties assigned by Transportation Supervisor or Superintendent 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Valid Mississippi Commercial Driver's License 
  • With a Passenger and School Bus endorsement 
  • Experience in mechanical maintenance, diagnostics 
  • and repair of diesel engines and major components 
  • Including two (2) years in a supervisory capacity 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High School Diploma or equivalent 

 

  • LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with staff members. 
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as bus parts and chemical containers. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. 
  • OTHER SKILLS: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in transportation field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and school and community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. 
  • WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical bus equipment. The employee may frequently work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, gas fumes and sprays. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.

Breach of said professional conduct includes but is not limited to: neglect of duty, dishonesty, engagement in acts that are contrary to VWSD policy, unlawful activities, or any other conduct which is seriously prejudicial to the school district. 

 

CLASSIFICATION UNDER FLSA: Non Exempt 

FUNDING SOURCE: General Fund 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 240 days
