            Position Title:              Speech Pathologist

            Reports To:                 Director, Special Education

  •  

    JOB GOAL:

    To utilize leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, school-based speech-language pathologists provide prevention, assessment, and remediation services for students who exhibit difficulties in the areas of language, speech, voice, and fluency. These services are designed to help children meet their educational goals.

     

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

    • Organizes a program that addresses local school speech-language goals.  
    • Coordinates speech-language services with student services provided by other school personnel.
    • Serves as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement
    • Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments
    • Provides a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, and language impairments
    • Provides screening to identify speech handicapped children at regular intervals and at specified levels
    • Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community
    • Provides appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet individual students’ needs and correct existing speech or language handicaps
    • Collaborates with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggestions for the student’s daily activities
    • Provides information, support, and counseling to parents and families when appropriate.
    • Maintains records of the speech-language program and prepares periodic reports as required.
    • Adheres to established rules, regulations, laws and appropriate ethical standards.     
    • Conducts speech, language and hearing screenings.
    • Administers formal and informal (ongoing & curriculum-based) assessments.
    • Obtains additional diagnostic information from appropriate persons and available records for speech-language purposes.
    • Analyzes and interprets information to make recommendations regarding the need for speech-language services.

     

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

    Master's degree or equivalent. Full approval in at least one area of special education. Three years of successful experience in special education and one year of successful experience as a supervisor.

     

    LANGUAGE SKILLS:

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

     

    REASONING ABILITY:

    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

     

    OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

    Must be able to transport between school buildings, districts and cities.  Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.  Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision,  and the ability to adjust focus.  The position requires meeting deadlines with severe time constraints, interacting with the public and staff, irregular or extended work hours.  The employee is responsible for safety, well-being, and work output of others. Must be able to meet demands from several people.

     

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    The employee will work in an environment adhering to school board policy. This position may require work hours that vary as a result of evening activities or emergencies. In addition, job requirements may require work on weekends, holidays and attendance at meetings.
